Abstract

The rediscovery of Jesus’ Jewishness has begun to engage Christian audiences in a lasting way. The focus is no longer merely on Jesus as a “born Jew,” something already known to Luther and, at least since the Second Vatican Council, part of the basic knowledge of Catholics as well. What has now moved to the center of attention is Jesus of Nazareth as a committed, conscious, practicing Jew. This, too, is not an entirely new discovery, but—unlike the mere acknowledgment of Jesus’ ethnic background—it has only recently begun to penetrate more deeply into Christian awareness. How should this development be understood? And where might it lead? This article explores these questions and argues that what we are witnessing could amount to a genuine turning point in the history of the Church and theology.
