“Light Cavalry” or “Doormats”? Contemporary Status of Religious Sisters in the Polish Roman Catholic Church

Abstract

This paper explores the status of religious sisters in Poland within the context of post-Vatican II changes and the enduring influence of gender dynamics in the Roman Catholic Church. Although the Council initiated crucial reforms aimed at the modernization of religious life, the reality for religious sisters in Poland remains paradoxical – this is evidenced by their limited leadership positions in the Church and academic roles compared to male religious, diocesan priests, and even laypeople, while they are a highly visible group recognized as an important part of Church life. What exactly is their status, and why is it so? The analysis is grounded in Canon law and statistics regarding positions of authority. While informed by the specific Polish context, it also establishes a comparative framework for understanding the status of religious women in similar cultural settings.
