Kulturen der künstlichen Intelligenz

Artificial Intelligence is one of the keywords of our time, and AI systems are currently initiating numerous transformations in various areas of everyday life. How can cultural anthropology and “Empirische Kulturwissenschaft” at the interface with digital anthropology contribute to understanding these transformations and to shap?ing social and cultural negotiation processes around AI? To answer this question, this article develops the concept of AI assemblages, which aims to illuminate the dynamics of sociotechnical relations between human and more-than-human actors or compo?nents surrounding AI systems. Assemblage thinking allows to reflect upon and describe numerous “small” transformations of everyday life connected to AI without uncritically reproducing grand narratives of sociotechnical change and upheaval. On a more gen?eral level, analyzing AI assemblages is a way to study cultures of AI, that is, to study “a whole way of life” (Williams) in which routines, relationships, and cultural orders are increasingly shaped by AI systems. Three examples illustrate this perspective: AI as?semblages in memory culture (virtual survivor testimonies in Holocaust remembrance), in popular culture (social media and their algorithms), and in academic culture (gen?erative AI in academic research and teaching).

Die Kommission Digitale Anthropologie hatte im Vorfeld des Kongresses ihre Mitglieder zu einem Beitrag aufgerufen und zusätzlich gezielt in der Kommission Mitglieder angesprochen, die argumentationsstarke Beiträge zum Thema liefern könnten. Dem Aufruf kamen Katrin Amelang, Christoph Bareither, Urmila Goel, Gertraud Koch, Sarah Thanner und Libuše Vep?rek nach. An der Diskussion beteiligten sich aus dem Plenum mit spontanen Beiträgen Ina Dietzsch, Lina Franken, Christine Hämmerling, Matthias Harbeck, Maren Heibges, Timo Heimerdinger, Sabine Imeri, Martina Klausner, Martina Röthl, Estrid Sørensen und Eberhard Wolff. Die Einführung und Moderation wurden von Anne Dippel übernommen.

Mix-a-lot: Impulse der Mixed-Methods-Forschung für die Empirische Kulturwissenschaft

“Mixed Methods” refers to the combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods within a research design. The mixed methods approach is shaped by a research community which is primarily active in the USA. How can anthropologists and ethnologists, who want or need to work across methodological boundaries – such as in interdisciplinary projects, when they intend to generalize their research findings more broadly, or when quantitative findings form the starting point of their qualitative investigations – benefit from the methodological impulses of the Mixed Methods community? My contribution examines the conceptual premises of mixed methods research, presents the three typical mixed methods research designs (convergent design, explanatory sequential design, exploratory sequential design), discusses new visual approaches for analyzing and presenting heterogeneous research data, and identifies as impulses for anthropologies and cultural studies: 1) that the mixed methods discourse can be used for a multi-layered method explication, even within purely qualitative research, 2) that the Mixed Methods community provides a specific vocabulary for anthropologists and ethnologists to precisely articulate where they can most effectively apply their methodological expertise in a heterogeneous co-laboration.

Gegen die Essenzialisierung

For some years now, certain cultural forms of expression as well as certain practices, artefacts or phenomena have been problematized and scandalized as cultural appropriation. The central thesis of this contribution is that the accusation of cultural appropriation is based on essentializing and therefore problematic concepts of culture. This accusation assumes that the phenomena or things labelled with the concept of cultural appropriation belong exclusively to certain groups of actors, whereas others use them in an illegitimate manner. The article focuses on the question of how new forms of (re)essentialization of culture are mobilized and how categorical boundaries are drawn in processes of ‘othering’ between a homogenized ‘we’ and clearly separated and equally homogenized ‘others’, based on the argument of a supposed cultural differ?ence. Cultural appropriation is deconstructed as a powerful slogan concept. The article analyzes not only the social discourses on cultural appropriation, but also the academic discourse that sometimes confirms or legitimizes the accusation of cultural appropriation. Overarching, the article discusses the question of how culture is instrumentalized today as a category of difference and how sovereignty of interpretation is articulated with regard to the mechanisms of cultural (re-)production and transmission.
